Girl Scout Camping Trip

Laura and I had promised the Girl Scouts last cookie season that if they raised enough money we would go camping. The girls had an amazing cookie season and raised $1800 for their first cookie season so it was time for Laura and I to make good on our promise of a camping trip. I have been nervous about the camping trip for awhile now for a couple reasons: We have interesting mix of moms and some of them are not excited to have to participate in the mother daughter camping trip, I am worried about planning, providing and cooking food for 20 people. I was also very nervous about the weather. After much praying and good luck I can say that Laura and I managed to pull off an awesome trip.
We camped at Platte River State park which is between Lincoln and Omaha. We had 3 teepees that we stayed in. Laura and I decided that it needed to be a mother daughter trip due to the age of the girls and the fact that we needed help. All the girls were able to go except one and it was because her mom was unable to go. I was telling my mom we were taking a trip and she said it sounded fun. When I needed an extra adult she was about the only person I could think of that would be excited to go and help with 10 girls. Abby, Mom and I slept in the blue teepee along with Abby's best friend Addison and her mom Andrea.
The girls had to help us prepare supper. Some of them thought it was fun.

Susie gave me a crash course in how to cook with the lodge pot and I practiced once at home. I was really hoping I could pull off supper for 20 people. It turned out delicious. Laura grilled hamburgers and I cooked potatoes and green beans in the lodge pots.

Enjoying our supper that we cooked.

The girls all had to complete a project for our 3 Cheers for Animals unit. They had to make a poster, flyer or book about an animal that they did research on. I was really proud that all the girls did the project and put a lot of thought into it. We all presented our projects and the girls all got their badges.

Abby did her project on dogs.

No camping trip would be complete without a fire, smores and some camp songs. All the moms were laughing so hard as we sang camp songs. It brought back good memories of 4-H camp.

We had also promised the girls horseback riding which proved to be a hard promise to keep. Since the girls were under 8 most places would not let them ride without just leading the horse. Platte River State park would let them ride at 6 though so it worked our perfect. Half of the girls and moms rode horses while the other half of us did a scavenger hunt and then we switched.

My mom had a great time and she was such a good sport about being Izzy's guardian.

I has been a rocky road getting this troop started (mostly due to parents) but it was so fun to hang out with these girls for the weekend. So proud to be their Girl Scout Leader. They have become a close tight knit group of friends.

We found a waterfall in Ne. Glad to say it was a very successful weekend. Laura and I will be promising camping for a successful cookie season again next year.
