Big 10 Games

For Christmas Bryce had gotten tickets to go to the Big Ten Basketball games in Chicago. He was beyond excited! He had been preparing for months by entering all the stats into the computer and generating a number based on the stats to see who the best teams and players were. Robb and Bryce call it analytics. I call it tricking Bryce into doing hours of math. They went to a ton of games which is exactly how Bryce would choose to spend most of his days. He got spoiled by grandma and grandpa and got a mocha every morning and they ate a lot of good food.

They made signs hooping to get on TV.

Bryce did make it on TV and his buddy Levi saw him, rewound it and took a picture on his TV. All the boys thought this was pretty cool!

Bryce couldn't have loved a Christmas present more! This trip was perfect for him. Thanks Bob and Susie for such a cool experience!

First Trap Meet

Caleb had expressed some interest in doing trap shooting on the school team this year so we decided to give it a try. Grandpa Steve let him borrow a shotgun, we attended the meeting, bought the gear and we were ready to try it out. It is ironic to me that they have a shooting club at school when the topic of school shootings is always in the news. On Monday morning we have to take Caleb's gun to school is really odd to say! Since Robb and I know nothing about this sport there has been a learning curve just trying to figure out everything that he needs. They have a lot of dads that help and supervise the kids during practice. So far I think he is liking it.

Funny side note: I am usually the one that picks Caleb up after trap practice since he gets picked up at 4:30. I usually come in work scrubs and I rarely wear a coat. One of the days Caleb was still shooting so I stood outside to watch him. The main coach asked if I was okay, I was really confused by this. He then went on to say that I wasn't really dressed appropriately for the weather and he wondered if maybe I would like to wait inside. I guess that was nice that he was concerned but also very weird. I guess I stuck out in scrubs instead of the camo coveralls that all the other dads were wearing.

Abby’s Endoscopy

Abby has always been a kid that feels everything through her stomach. She is excited, she gets a stomachache, she is nervous, sad, worried she gets a stomachache. I always joked that if anyone in the entire school had the stomach bug that Abby would catch it. Putting all these pieces together now, it all makes sense.
Abby had been waking up at 2-3 in the morning most nights crying of stomach pain. She also was wanting someone to lay with her to go to bed each night. At the time I thought she was scared to sleep in her room all of a sudden and that she was nervous about something going on at school. Whenever I tried to ask about what she was nervous about she would say that school was fine and that she wasn't nervous, her stomach just hurt. This went on for almost 2 weeks of her never sleeping good and having dark purple circles under her eyes. It finally got to a point where I made her an appointment because I was worried about appendicitis or if nothing was physically wrong she needed to talk to someone to figure what was going on. She saw Becky at Dr. David's office and they did blood work and an x-ray. The first round of blood work was normal, she didn't have a UTI or any issues on the x-ray but the next day Becky called me at work to tell me that her markers for Celiac disease were extremely high. I was shocked! First of all that was not on my radar at all and I didn't realize that they had run blood work for that. Evidently the level should be less than  0.5 and Abby's was 156. Yikes! So our next step was a GI consult.
I work with the Pediatric GI at St. E's so I just called them up and tried to get her in as soon as possible. The soonest the office would schedule her was for a month out and she was already so miserable. There aren't a lot of perks of being a nurse but this time working with them paid off and I got her an appointment for the next Monday and she would have her upper endoscopy on Friday. Looking back this was all such a blur and I didn't cope very well with it. I knew that a celiac diagnosis would change her whole life and make things very complicated at times. I cried a lot when she wasn't looking because I didn't want this for her. I didn't want her to have to deal with this. It was a long week waiting for our appointment so that we had a for sure answer.
She had her upper endoscopy at St. E's so it was the people that I worked with taking care of her which put me at ease. I knew that the procedure itself was quick and easy and that she wouldn't remember any of it. She was a champ and was just a little loopy when she came out of anesthesia. I had to go back to work afterwards but Robb stayed home with her for the day and she was running around outside a couple hours later.

When she left that day, Rose the PA, told us to start decreasing the amount of gluten she was eating to see if it helped. By the next week we had our official diagnosis that she for sure had celiac disease. She would have to eat strictly gluten free for the rest of her life. The first couple months we learned a ton and I could probably have a minor as being a dietician. We had to replace all of our wooden spoons, plastic bowls and containers, non stick pans and cutting boards. We transitioned to all stainless steel and gradually started finding substitutes for her favorite items. She had to start taking a lunch to school everyday and we gradually transitioned all of our family meals to gluten free. Abby handled this with so much grace I can't even tell you how proud we have been at her attitude about all of this! Caleb has been the only one to really push back on going gluten free. He thinks he hates it if it is gluten free. We have found some really great substitutes it just increases our grocery bill by 50% or more. We still keep some gluten free snacks in the house for the boys but most of the other food is gluten free. All of the kids had to have blood testing done to see if they also had it and Robb and I were also tested. Everyone else came up negative for now but Robb carries the gene so it is a possibility that at anytime he may develop an intolerance or any of our kids that also have that gene. I finally had to stop feeling sorry for our family and Abby and realize that this sucked but it was an illness that we could manage with a change in her diet. We could keep her healthy just by feeding her the correct foods. That was what really help put things in perspective for me.

Celebrating Steph’s 35th

Steph is turning 35 and we decided that warranted a party. We all met in Lincoln and went to MoMo's pizza for supper and indulged in a delicious cake. We realized that this is the very first time that Steph, Mitch and I had ever went out with us and our spouses. We had a great time and after some drinks had plenty of funny stories to share. After supper we went to one of Steph's favorite bars, Starlight Lounge. You feel like you have walked into 1970 when you go into this basement bar. It is super fun and they have really good martinis. Happy Birthday little sis!

Bryce’s Basketball Season

Bryce played on the NYBA A team again this year. He has slowly found his spot in the team and is no longer so nervous or hesitant about playing. He puts all of his time and effort into practice and games. He could practice and play basketball all day everyday and never get tired of it. He is great at rebounding and can jump really high. It makes me nervous because he is usually going up against players that are quite a bit bigger than him. He usually plays forward or guard. This team has been playing together for a while now and they work really well together. All the games are fast paced and intense. They are always fun to watch.

Congratulations on another great season!

Caleb’s Basketball Season

This winter Caleb decided that he wanted to play basketball but he didn't want it to be as much of a commitment or as time consuming as the Norris Youth Basketball program. We decided that we would sign him up for YMCA rec basketball. He got one other Norris kid to play on the team with him and the rest of the kids were just assigned a team. Robb and Andy were going to coach. It ended up being a good experience for Caleb but a very interesting season overall. I'm not sure that Robb and Andy knew what they were signing up for when they agreed to coach. There were a couple of kids on the team that may or may not of ever touched a basketball in their life. Evidently, if you are playing rec league when you are a 6th grader you are either really bad or new to the sport. Robb and Andy had patience like no other and they got the team whipped into shape by the end of the season. They did a great job finding each players strengths and playing them in positions where they could succeed. Many of the teams that they played against faced the same challenges as they did and they had a lot of competitive games and they were even able to pull out a couple wins. This season was good for Caleb, not only for the exercise and activity, but he also was forced to become a better ball handler. Usually, he would be the bigger guy that you would put in the post to rebound for you but he was one of the few players that was able to get the ball down the court so he played a lot of point guard. We also learned that while Robb is a great coach, it is a terrible idea for him to coach Caleb. Caleb has a really hard time being coachable for Robb and he often got pretty huffy in games and Robb would threaten to take him out if he didn't start listening. The odd thing is, is that he is very coachable for other people just not his parents. Robb will be hanging up his whistle on coaching until the girls find a sport he can coach.
There was never a lack of aggression on the court from Caleb!
