First Bookclub

I've been wanting to be part of a book club for a while now, but I haven’t had much luck finding one to join. So, I decided to start my own! I picked a book, talked to people at work, and set a date to host it. I had a really good turnout, and we had some great conversations about the book. I'm excited to keep this going.

If you know me at all, you know that having a bunch of people over is usually more of a nightmare than a fun activity. But I’m trying to step out of my introverted box a little and try new things. In the end, it was really fun!

New Glasses

This year, we switched to a new eye doctor. Emmy had been seeing a different doctor each year, and I wanted more consistency. One of my patients, whom I had taken care of, mentioned that she worked at this new eye clinic and was responsible for contact lens education for kids. She was very sweet, and I asked her if she thought Emmy was old enough to try contacts. She said Emmy was on the younger end, but she was willing to give it a try. Emmy was prepared and kept a positive attitude throughout the process, even though it was challenging for her.

She had a few instances in basketball where her glasses flew off, so I thought contacts might be a good option, at least occasionally. However, Emmy had difficulty getting the contacts in. She struggled with touching her eye and keeping it open. The lady helping her was incredibly patient and kind, and Emmy really put forth a good effort. In the end, we decided that she might still be a bit too young for contacts, but we plan to try again next year.

Emmy has a hard time picking out new glasses because she gets so used to seeing herself in the ones she wears daily. I think we tried on every pair of kids' glasses at least twice before she finally decided on these. I've learned that anything I suggest will be immediately shot down, so I just let her make the decision herself.

Goodbye Chicago

Just one more sleep before we head home, but can you really say you’ve been to Chicago if you haven’t tried Chicago-style pizza? After a long day, we all indulged in cheesy, greasy pizza goodness—even Abby! I found a place that offered gluten-free Chicago-style pizza, and she said it was delicious!

The day may have been long, but the night felt even longer. Emmy had been really tired and dragging all day, and I thought she was just worn out. In the middle of the night, she woke me up, saying she didn’t feel well. She had a fever and was very hot to the touch. She also felt nauseous, and unfortunately, I didn’t have any medications with me. So, she and I ended up sleeping in the hotel bathroom (gross!) all night because she felt like she might get sick. I was panicking a bit, knowing we had to catch a plane first thing in the morning—having a puking child on a flight is everyone’s nightmare!

As soon as the store opened, I rushed to the Walgreens across the street. They had literally locked up everything, I guess the homeless population probably made that necessary. I managed to get some Tylenol, Motrin, and nausea meds, and I prayed we would get through the day.

So, back to the ID crisis. We had asked Aaron to overnight Brook's ID to us at the hotel. We checked daily, but there had been no delivery. According to the tracking information, weather had delayed it, though we weren’t sure what kind of weather could cause such a hold-up. As we headed to the airport that morning, Brook was feeling a bit of a mental meltdown—I think I would have felt the same way in her position.

We made it through the Omaha airport, but the Chicago airport was a different story. You could probably get through Omaha with just about anything; security there isn’t exactly top-notch. Ginger reassured Brook that we wouldn’t leave her alone in the Chicago airport and that if necessary, they would take a later flight. By sheer luck, we managed to get her through security after explaining that she had just turned 18 and making light of "kids these days." Ginger and Brook had to sign a statement verifying her identity, and a manager had to approve it as well. We all breathed a sigh of relief when we got to board the plane together. We had a great trip!

Navy Pier

We went to Navy Pier. This place was beautiful! The water and the Chicago skyline really made you feel like you were in a big city.

These girls are adorable and I love that they are so close.

I am so thankful for the wonderful group that we get to call our family. We had such a great time spending the extended weekend together.

Shedd Aquarium and Ralph Lauren

A couple of years ago, Abby visited Shedd Aquarium in Chicago with Addison and had a lot of fun, so we decided to go there for the morning. The aquarium was pretty cool! We saw penguins, otters, dolphins, and one of my favorites—the walrus.

The seal show was entertaining, and it got even more interesting when a child crawled over the railing. Surprisingly, the parent didn’t go to retrieve them, so the handler was left trying to keep the child out of the water while also keeping the seal away from the kid. We witnessed a great seal show alongside some very questionable parenting!

Susie made us reservations at the Ralph Lauren café for lunch. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed browsing a variety of clothing items that were so expensive, I felt like I didn’t even belong near them!

As the day wore on, we all started to get a little punchy. Susie and Ginger decided to try on matching outfits, and we laughed so hard that we were genuinely worried about peeing our pants!

This trip has been so fun and I am so lucky to get to go on this girls trip with Abby and Emmy.

The Magnificent Mile

Our hotel was situated on the Magnificent Mile, allowing us to walk to most of the places we wanted to visit. We quickly got a feel for the "Big City" as we noticed that the sirens never seemed to stop—ever! Across the street from us was a hospital, which added to the chaos of the atmosphere. Next to our hotel was the Starbucks headquarters, an enormous multi-level café. However, we soon discovered that they didn’t serve the sweet iced drinks we were used to at regular Starbucks locations. Susie and Ginger enjoyed trying the exotic coffee blends, while the rest of us opted for drinks loaded with enough milk and sugar to mask the coffee flavor!

When visiting a new city, Abby and Emmy naturally sought out a Chick-fil-A. What made it really neat was their unique ordering system! After placing your order, it seemed that people on the upper level would prepare the food and place it in a bag. That bag was then clipped to a trolley line, which delivered it to a staff member who called out your name to hand it to you. This was definitely something we hadn’t seen before!

Emmy held tightly to my hand, while Brook and Abby clasped each other’s hands. It was really sweet to see. None of us were used to the number of homeless people on the streets, and it was especially heartbreaking to see families with young children. This really tugged at my heartstrings. While we do have homelessness in Lincoln, it was nothing compared to what we encountered downtown. The traffic was also chaotic, with constant honking and people slamming on their brakes. It really made me glad that we had decided to rely on Uber for getting around!

Abby and Brook could have tried on outfits and shopped all day long! Emmy, however, is a fair-weather shopper; if they don’t have something that catches her interest, she quickly loses steam. So, while the girls tried on outfit after outfit, Emmy found a cozy spot to relax.

It was dark when we headed home, and we all got a little education about Chicago at night. A giant rat ran in front of Abby and Brook, and they screamed so loudly that it should have alarmed everyone—yet their shriek just blended into the city noise. We also saw a man with his pants down, peeing against the side of a building, completely unbothered. To this day, the girls still tell the rat story. After that incident, the biggest insult in our house became calling someone a "street rat."

On a less amusing note, while we were headed into Sephora that day, we saw a man sitting against the building with his head at an odd angle and saliva running from his mouth. As we crossed the street, we noticed a police officer trying to flag down an ambulance nearby. When we walked into Sephora, Brooks asked if that guy was dead. I told her no, but in my head, I was thinking yes, he probably was. His color was terrible, and his positioning was unnatural. I felt shaken by the whole situation, hoping we hadn’t just witnessed someone's last moments.

As I wandered back toward the front of the store, I saw the man I thought was dead becoming belligerent with the EMTs. I was relieved that he was alive but still worried about his condition. When we left, he was facedown on the sidewalk as if he had fallen forward without catching himself. Even if he didn’t want help, they needed to intervene. The ambulance was on its way, and I said a quick prayer. As we learn in nursing, everyone is someone's someone. It broke my heart to think that some mothers son was out there in such bad shape.

Okay, this picture was planned, but it turned out to be hilarious! After a long day of shopping, trying on clothes, and walking around, we found a place to eat across the street from our hotel. Emmy could hardly keep her eyes open. When her root beer arrived in a brown bottle, we couldn’t resist having her pose for this picture.

We Made It

After collecting our luggage, we headed outside to wait for our Uber. With six of us, we always opted for an SUV, which was always black and made us feel like we were part of a secret service convoy. Unfortunately, it took longer than we expected to get out of the airport and reach our hotel. Checking in was also a slow process; at one point, I thought Susie might just reach across the desk and give the snotty clerk a piece of her mind!

Once we finally checked in, we went to see our rooms, and they were absolutely beautiful and impressive. We changed quickly and set out to walk to our dinner reservation at Joe's Seafood and Crab. We were in a hurry to make our reservation, but we had no idea where we were going. At one point, we ended up in the underground walkways beneath the main streets, which was a little unsettling. We were definitely not in Nebraska anymore!

The restaurant had a fantastic old-school Chicago vibe, and the food was simply amazing. At that point, we were so hungry that we probably would have been impressed by chicken nuggets from McDonald's!

Chicago Bound

The girls had been looking forward to a big trip together, and all it took was a mention to Grandma for their wish to come true: Chicago, here we come! When we arrived at the airport, everyone was busy pulling out their IDs and boarding passes. However, a small hiccup arose—Brook had forgotten her ID. If this had happened just five months earlier, it wouldn’t have been an issue, but the rules are stricter once you turn 18. Thankfully, after we explained the situation, they allowed her to board the plane with a picture of her ID on Ginger's phone. Still, this left Brook feeling quite nervous for the trip ahead.
