We did take a break to do a little snorkeling, but the main event was watching Robb take a surfing lesson for a couple of hours. It was a bit tricky to see him from where we were lounging, but Steph and I made our way over to catch the action. We were both pretty impressed when we saw him manage to stand up on the board a couple of times!
The tour took us out to the middle of the water, where we all held onto a paddleboard with lights attached to the bottom. The lights attract plankton, which is the main food source for manta rays, so the rays come in close to feed. We used snorkeling gear to get a better look beneath the surface. It was incredible to see a massive manta ray gliding by. While it was cool to witness, I had to keep reminding myself that they only eat plankton—because, honestly, they’re huge and a little intimidating!
Between the freezing cold water and getting a bit seasick, this wasn’t exactly Steph’s favorite activity. But it was definitely a unique experience!
