Caleb’s Basketball Season

This winter Caleb decided that he wanted to play basketball but he didn't want it to be as much of a commitment or as time consuming as the Norris Youth Basketball program. We decided that we would sign him up for YMCA rec basketball. He got one other Norris kid to play on the team with him and the rest of the kids were just assigned a team. Robb and Andy were going to coach. It ended up being a good experience for Caleb but a very interesting season overall. I'm not sure that Robb and Andy knew what they were signing up for when they agreed to coach. There were a couple of kids on the team that may or may not of ever touched a basketball in their life. Evidently, if you are playing rec league when you are a 6th grader you are either really bad or new to the sport. Robb and Andy had patience like no other and they got the team whipped into shape by the end of the season. They did a great job finding each players strengths and playing them in positions where they could succeed. Many of the teams that they played against faced the same challenges as they did and they had a lot of competitive games and they were even able to pull out a couple wins. This season was good for Caleb, not only for the exercise and activity, but he also was forced to become a better ball handler. Usually, he would be the bigger guy that you would put in the post to rebound for you but he was one of the few players that was able to get the ball down the court so he played a lot of point guard. We also learned that while Robb is a great coach, it is a terrible idea for him to coach Caleb. Caleb has a really hard time being coachable for Robb and he often got pretty huffy in games and Robb would threaten to take him out if he didn't start listening. The odd thing is, is that he is very coachable for other people just not his parents. Robb will be hanging up his whistle on coaching until the girls find a sport he can coach.
There was never a lack of aggression on the court from Caleb!
