This volleyball season had a rough start, and it was one of those moments where you feel terrible for your child and there is nothing you can do to make it better. Abby had tried out for the NE Juniors team with her 4 friends. The other 3 girls made it, and she did not. While on the outside she handled it well I knew she was super sad. We had to have the discussion of, if she really wanted to play volleyball then we would find somewhere for her to play volleyball. After thinking about it for a week or so she decided that she liked volleyball enough to play for a different team. She tried out for the NE One club team and made a travel team. She was excited about this, and we were nervous about the commitment that it was going to be but excited for her.
She really loved her team and her coaches. Dale was a one of the coaches and his daughter Maddie was the other coach. Dale was laidback and calm, and Maddie was loud and fierce. They balanced each other out well. They played Lincoln, Omaha, KC and a Des Moines tournament. Abby had skills practice 1x a week and team practice 1x a week. This kept her super busy!
It was great that Abby loved her team and coaches, but I will say that Robb and I were not cut out to be travel team parents. I think there were a couple main reasons,
1. Abby was not our only child and usually we had multiple activities on any given weekend.
2. We don't like to spend money on hotel rooms to stay in Omaha or Iowa.
3. We do not want any part of the 50+ text a day group chat
4. We aren't really game to plan an extravagant party bag, team cheer or team supper.
Thank goodness Abby fit in better than we did!
Abby focused mostly on her front row skills and being a hitter. She liked the front row, but it did cut down on her playing time and I missed not watching her serve as often. She didn't get as much play time as she would have liked but she was a good sport. Her lack of competitive spirit probably comes from me and doesn't work in her favor when it comes to being aggressive in sports.
