In 4th grade in Nebraska you learn Nebraska history. I remember this being one of my favorites as a kid. You learn all about the pioneer days and how hard people had it back then. I am pretty sure I never would have made it as a pioneer woman! At Norris you get to take 2 of the best field trips in 4th grade. In the spring you go to Homestead National Monument for Pioneer days. A bunch of seniors come show the kids how to wash clothes with a scrub board and lye soap, you learn how to make candles, sew a quilt square, cook over a fire and make wood toys. They also visit a barn by Firth and they take a ride on a horse drawn carriage, have corn picking contest, have a real black smith show them how to make things and see a lot of the old farm equipment and tools. In the fall they go back to Homestead National Monument and they go to Pioneer School. They are required to dress like pioneer children and they bring a lunch that consists of items that pioneer children would have brought to school. Abby has been excited about her pioneer outfit all year and her and grandma Susie had picked out a pattern and material to make her a pioneer outfit.
Abby was the cutest little pioneer girl every! She looks like Laura Ingalls Wilder.
She packed her lunch in a pail. She put a lot of thought into what she was going to bring. Not only did it have to be something that the pioneers would have had it also had to be gluten free which was probably not a recognized issue in the pioneer days. She took slices of summer sausage and pieces of cheese, chocolate chip cookies, gluten free biscuits and an apple.
The teacher that does the Pioneer day is great at her job and "pretend" hits kids for not sitting up straight, mumbling etc. She talks to them like in the "old" days and they have to respond back to her appropriately.
Abby and her friend Kaylee.
They read out of the readers for their age group and they even participated in a spelling bee. Abby made it to the last round. This is always a field trip I love to chaperone!
